Materials refining on theMoon
نویسنده
چکیده
Oxygen, metals, silicon, and glass are raw materials that will be required for long-term habitation and production of structural materials and solar arrays on the Moon. A process sequence is proposed for refining these materials from lunar regolith, consisting of separating the required materials from lunar rock with fluorine. The fluorine is brought to the Moon in the form of potassium fluoride, and is liberated from the salt by electrolysis in a eutectic salt melt. Tetrafluorosilane produced by this process is reduced to silicon by a plasma reduction stage; the fluorine salts are reduced to metals by reaction with metallic potassium. Fluorine is recovered from residual MgF and CaF2 by reaction with K2O. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

EFFECT OF REFINING PROCESS ON POROSITY AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH PRESSURE AL-SI ALLOY DIE CASTINGS
Abstract: This study presents the research results of effect that refining process has on porosity and mechanical properties of high pressure die castings made of AlSi12S alloy. The operation of refining was carried out in a melting furnace with the use of an FDU Mini Degasser. Mechanical properties (UTS, YS, Elongation, Brinell Hardness) were assessed on samples taken from high pressure die ca...
متن کاملMicrostructural refining during friction stir processing of SAF 2205 duplex stainless steel
Friction stir processing (FSP) was conducted on a SAF 2205 duplex stainless steel at advancing speed of 50 mm/min and rotational speed of 400 rpm. Characterization of evolved material was studied using electron microscopy equipped with electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) system. The results indicated that the severe plastic deformation and the heat generated during the FSP developed a v...
متن کاملEFFECT OF SCANDIUM ON THE GRAIN REFINING AND AGEING BEHAVIOUR OFCASTAl-Si-MgALLOY
Microstructure and properties of the Al-6Si-0.3Mg alloys containing scandium (0.2 to 0.6wt %) were investigated. The microstructure was observed by optical microscopy, the hardness was determined by Vickers tester and phase transformation was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. The results showed that scandium can refine dendrites, enhance hardness in the aged all...

Two liquid phases: molton metal (or alloy) and slag occur in most metallurgical systems. The slag occurring at the surface of the metal bath not only protects it against negative atmospheric effects but also enables to make many treatments necessary to achieve good quality of the material designed for shaping the casted products. In the conditions of fully controlled process (e.g. melting or re...
متن کاملLimit of Dislocation Density and Ultra-Grain-Refining on Severe Deformation in Iron
It is well-known that severe deformation to metals causes a direct grain refinement of the matrix without special heat-treatments due to the mechanism of dynamic continuous recrystallization (DCR). However, the microstructural revolution during severe deformation is seemed to be different depending on the deformation mode, namely the direction of deformation. In general, multi-directional defor...
